Save Mumia Abu-Jamal from Legal Lynching!

On Tuesday 26 January a small united-front rally was held outside the American Embassy in Wellington, New Zealand to protest about the US Supreme Court ruling against Mumia Abu-Jamal.

The IBT initiated the action around the slogan “Save Mumia Abu-Jamal from Legal Lynching!” Various left-wing organisations, unionists and individuals were invited to participate. In the end, about 20 people took part in the demonstration, including a number of anarchists and other activists with whom we have worked in defence of those arrested in the 15 October 2008 “anti-terrorism” raids. In the US, New Zealand and beyond, police framing of left-wing activists for major crimes is a time-honoured tradition of bourgeois 'justice.'

The demonstration was monitored from a distance by the cops, while embassy officials photographed and videoed the participants. Protesters chanted slogans such as “Free Mumia Abu-Jamal!” and some chalked “Abolish the Racist Death Penalty!” on the pavement. IBT spokesperson Bill Logan briefly updated the crowd on Mumia’s case and noted that the recent Supreme Court decision puts the execution of this innocent man on the agenda once again. Most protesters were fully aware of the details of the racist frame-up of Mumia and have been involved in previous activities in his defence.

Supporters of Mumia Abu-Jamal are on high alert following the unfavourable ruling of the Supreme Court, and there was a sense of commitment among the demonstration’s participants to continue the struggle to free the 'voice of the voiceless.'
